Session 5:
Today's session was on Information and Communication Technology (ICT). ICT in my opinion has really changed the world with the new innovations in this area. It has drastically changed how people communicate and connect with each other. Today's session focused on many aspects of ICT like media, gaming, cloud computing, internet, information systems and technologies. We discussed the positive and negative impacts of ICT and what is expected in the future from ICT.
For me, one of the most interesting idea was about cloud computing. Although i had heard of it before, i never really understood its meaning. Now i'm able to understand how cloud computing has helped many innovations to be connected to each other. Through the knowledge on cloud computing, i am now able to understand why some companies now prefer to have their employees carry a tablet with no hard-disk and such.
Another interesting part of the lecture was in discussing whether ICT has helped us solve problems like poverty, or helped in education, healthcare, agriculture etc. I have to agree that ICT has lead to many poor people know more about the world and take action to earn more revenue in turn (for instance where farmers get to know about what crops are selling more than others and at what price, they can in turn produce those crops more so as to earn more.) In my opinion, ICT has also helped in healthcare as it has allowed doctors to communicate faster with experts when dealing with new cases which has helped to reduce casualties.
A key takeaway from this session for me was through the quote by Kofi Annan "Today's real borders are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated." This quote is very meaningful as it shows the true nature of how technology has shaped the world. With technology, we are so integrated with each other and the happenings around the world that there doesn't seem to be any borders among nations. And i also agree that there are gaps between people with differences in privileges, freedom and power. Take for instance farmers in a rural part in Africa and in USA. Farmers in Africa may be disadvantage as may not be able to know the market rates like the farmers in USA do and this can cause gaps between people. Hence, i believe that ICT is one way through which the borders said by Kofi Anan may be reduced.
